Project development
Effective projects start with working out what you want to achieve. This sounds pretty straightforward but it doesn’t always happen. We firmly believe that making a project deliver what you want when you want it really depends on working these things out properly before you start, and then making sure all the people involved in the project understand this.
Projects where you take the time and trouble to accurately define things before you start run faster, produce the desired result, and cost less money.
Before the project actually starts we work with you to:
- Establish the project background – why you are doing this?
- Identify who needs to be involved and why
- Set the performance standards – what does success look like?
- Clearly 'state the project' in terms of end result, time and cost
- Develop a clear and measurable set of objectives.
We put in place other things to make your project succeed on time and on budget:
- Clearly defining work packages so you know what you are going to get and have the best possible idea of how much it will cost and how long it will take
- Establishing clear understandings about who is responsible for what – and making sure that they are able to take on that responsibility
- Working out the sequence in which things need to be done
- Facing up to the risks and working out what might be done to avoid or reduce them .... and this takes us back to risk management.
By now you will be ready to actually start your project, and yes it will go a lot better and get the results you expect.
Our experience
Our experience extends across a broad range of successful projects where we have applied an approach of carefully defining before you start. Examples of this include:
- Managing the government’s response to the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification which involved over a dozen government agencies and numerous interest groups
- Managing a number of successful conferences and business development projects for academic, teaching and professional organisations
- Delivering an innovative online career management program for a NZ university - an international team effort between InsideOutWorks, the Australian product champion and programmers in USA
